Young at Art
Arts Visalia will be exhibiting the annual Young at Art exhibition. Young at Art is an exhibition of the work of the children’s art classes taking place this summer. Each artist will have at least one piece in the exhibit representing each of the summer’s theme of line, color, shape, space, form, value, and texture. Each class focuses on the seven elements of art with a strong emphasis of connecting artists and histories to each subject. Young at Art is always a popular time at Arts Visalia.

Art classes for children and adults are ongoing at Arts Visalia. Our seven weeks of summer Young at Art children’s classes have started and focus on the basic elements of art – line, color, shape, space, form, value, and texture. Please download registration forms for classes and workshops from our website artsvisalia.org, or stop in and pick up the summer schedule at the gallery!

Arts Visalia Visual Art Gallery and gift shop is open from noon to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and is located at 214 East Oak Avenue, Visalia, California 93291. For more information on all these events and available classes visit our website at artsvisalia.org or call the gallery at (559) 739-0905.

Abstract Oil Paintings

Peg Bonnar Hutson

Peg Bonnar Hutson didn’t become an artist until recently. Instead, music was her passion. For 24 years she was the choir teacher at Valley Oak Middle School in Visalia and won a number of music educator awards. But she was a showman at heart. She bet her students each year if all four choirs got Superior ratings at the Visalia choir contest, she would do something outrageous. In 2013, when she was asked to teach a beginning art class, she jumped in. “I was given a room with chairs, clipboards and an overhead projector. That’s it,” she said. So to teach art with no budget she incorporated things like chalk art and a 1,000 origami crane project.

She immersed herself in learning about art and realized she loved the medium. “Often I was only one lesson ahead of my students,” she said, but she had caught the bug. She took private oil painting lessons and had her first show at Cort Gallery in Three Rivers last year.

Hutson’s work features vibrant oil paintings in abstract form. She is best known for infusing her work with emotional hues and bold color stories. Many of her paintings are in thick “Impasto” forms which seem to leap off the canvas and invite you to touch. Her most recent work is based on the emotions of nature around her.  She will show these works along with pieces from her collection “Genesis 1,” which includes the painting, Tree Yielding Seeds, as well as other works depicting the creation of the world according to Genesis.

As a long-time musician, Peg will sing Broadway tunes during the reception.

My passion is painting. Normally I paint in acrylics on canvas, but I love to upcycle found pieces such as barn wood. My art is always very colorful! Growing up here in Tulare County I spent many foggy days passing time creating colorful works of art. I enjoy painting light-hearted whimsical subjects, mermaids and fairies are two of my favorites. Also, expect to see many Days of the Dead influenced pieces. I also host paint parties! For more information visit.  www.paintedpinkparty.com for more information

Tony Bernard

Hot August art nights are in full swing this month! We are also very proud to welcome back the artist who kicked off First Friday with us here at our Downtown Gastropub, Tony Bernard!

Tony has been an artist pretty much from the time he could pick up a pencil and is a Visalia local. When he’s not on his daily grind as a tattoo artist at Old Foxx Tattoo, he can be found practicing mixed martial arts at Eliteteam Visalia and working on his finely detailed paintings, which he will be bringing along with his Star Wars-themed pieces to the Gastropub Beer Garden on Friday, August 3rd!

We are very excited to have Tony back and we’ll kick off the event at 5PM! DJ M E Z T I S O U L will be on the 1’s and 2’s for the evening. Cheers, everyone! We’ll see you in the beer garden! 🎨+🍺 = ❤
